About the Wicha Music Foundation

The Wicha Music Foundation (WMF) was founded in 2009 by Miroslav and Colleen Wicha in loving memory of Jan Charles Wicha, an amazing man and violinist who dedicated his life to making the world a better place through his passion and love of music.  Jan Wicha emigrated to Canada in 1969 from his home Czechoslovakia and played first violin at the Bratislava State Opera, Cairo Symphony, Toronto Symphony and the Atlantic Symphony Orchestra in Canada.

The WMF was founded to promote and increase the appreciation of classical music through the organizing of musical events and performances and by providing financial assistance in any form to classical musicians or any donees that are devoted to the promotion and support of classical music.

The WMF also owns an original Andreas Ferdinandus Mayr built in Salzburg circa 1771, which it loans to qualified and deserving violinists.  For the past three years the violin was played by Marie Lacasse, a first violinist for the Orchestre Symphonique de Montreal.

The WMF supports the annual Concertmaster Chair of the Atlantic Chebucto Symphony, The Festival International des Hautes-Laurentides and Alexandre da Costa’s project “Stradivarius at the Opera” with the Vienna Philharmonic. The WMF is also the proud Presenter and Sponsor of the inaugural Tra Luce & Sogno Festival Di Postignano from July 26th – 29th 2018 at the Castello di Postignano, Italy.
